Congratulations, Katri!
Finnish-born cellist Katri Ervamaa, DMA, is a multifaceted performer, with special amity for chamber music, new music and creative improvisation, and especially creative collaborations across genres and art forms. As the Head of the Residential College Music Program, Katri has impacted students at all stages of performance and education.
She has performed and given master classes throughout North America, Europe and Taiwan. Katri is also a founding member and past president of Brave New Works new music ensemble, the Muse Ensemble, the Järnefelt Piano Trio and E3Q, an improvisation-based genre-defying trio of cello, trumpet and percussion. She appears on Envoy Recordings, Block M Records, and AMP Records labels. Most recently, she appeared in the documentary ”Mestiza Music,” produced by WFYI-Indinapolis, on 60 PBS stations nationwide, and the Brave New Works record ”The Outer Bar: Music of Mead and Morris”.
From the University Record, "Throughout Ervamaa’s 19 years of service, permanent course offerings in the RC Music Program have grown 54%. She combines teaching with a robust performance and recording career, with both regionally- and internationally-based ensembles, to advance teaching and learning for U-M students across several major academic units.
Ervamaa’s approach to music is modern and fun, and provides her students the building blocks to connect with music and understand it on an intellectual level. Ervamaa has earned several major awards, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Classical Recording in 2008 and a Michigan Jammie’s Album of the Year award in 2011."
