Senior Capstone: Social Sciences Study Management
In this course, students will learn to manage projects through the four quarters of the QMSS quadrant: Question, Method, Study, Solution. In this capstone experience, students work as teams on projects addressing social science questions using both consultant and analyst roles. The course includes feedback and support through weekly project management training sessions. QMSS 451 has enforced prerequisites of QMSS 201 and QMSS 301. Important registration information regarding QMSS 451:
- All seats in QMSS 451 are reserved for declared QMSS minors who have completed QMSS 201 and 301, and registration is restricted to “Department Consent Only.” This means you need to get an individual course permission to be able to enroll in QMSS 451 for next semester.
- We reserve all seats in QMSS 451 for seniors based on anticipated graduation dates, not by credits. If you are graduating at the end of the semester in which you are trying to take QMSS 451, you have first priority. If you are graduating in the following semester, you have second priority. Any students who request to take QMSS 451 during their junior year or earlier will be reviewed by the program and, if approved, be given last priority for open seats.
- We cannot guarantee that students will receive a permission for their first-ranked day/time preference, but we do guarantee that all students who are declared QMSS minors by the start of registration, have applied to graduate at the end of the term in which they need to take QMSS 451, and have completed a QMSS 451 Permission Request form (to be released during Backpacking each semester) will receive a permission for one of the sections of QMSS 451.

- All permissions for QMSS 451 will be sent on the same date, to be announced each semester.
- You will get an email from Wolverine Access to inform you which course section you have been given a permission for and to instruct you to complete your registration in Wolverine Access. Getting the email alone does not automatically enroll you in the course.
- You will NOT be able to register for QMSS 451 until you receive this permission email, and you will NOT be notified ahead of time which section you will get a permission for, as all permissions are assigned on the same day. If you attempt to register for QMSS 451 in Wolverine Access before you are given a permission or for a section that you were not given a permission for, you will receive an error message.
- You will only be guaranteed a seat in the course for which you were given a permission, so please make sure your permission request form is filled out accurately and completely ahead of time. If you want to request to switch sections of QMSS 451 after getting a permission, you will be added to an internal waitlist for that new section.
- If you have a change in your availability and preference for QMSS 451 sections for any reason, you may edit your response to the 451 Permission Request Form.
- We offer QMSS 451 every Fall and Winter semester. The number of sections and their days and times may change each semester, so please be sure to check the LSA Course Guide for the most up-to-date information!
- The form will ask that you rank your preference for the sections we are offering that semester.
- The form includes an opportunity to provide additional information about your QMSS 451 permission request, so please make sure the information you provide is accurate and complete.
- If you are not graduating in the semester you request to take QMSS 451 and all seats fill for all QMSS 451 courses, you will be placed on an internal waitlist and receive an email notifying you of such (including which number on the waitlist you are). If seats open up for any reason, you will be notified and given the opportunity to take the open seat or wait until the following semester or later to take QMSS 451.
