 (1956, fiction, 2 hours)
This is one of the most important classics in Egyptian
movie history. It is based on a novel by Nobel prize
winning author Naguib Mahfouz. The novel is part of
Mahfouz’s famous trilogy about Cairo which follows
the life of the Cairene patriarch Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd
al-Jawad and his family across three generations,
from 1919 – the Egyptian revolution against the British
Colonizers to the end of the Second World War in
1944. The novel and the movie provide an extensive
 look at Cairo’s society
