Geeklife Engagement Series: Earn Points for Honors Engagement

Have an interest in the arts? Interested in attending events with UMS? Join your Honors peers to attend a performance and discuss your reactions, opinions and thought-provoking moments. Honors students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend. 

Students are able to earn one Sophomore Engagement Point by attending any two performances and engaging in the associated discussions or reflections offered through this series during a given term. 

Specific details are provided when registering to attend an event.

Honors Cinema engages students in classic cinematography, applying a critical eye to the style, content, and acting of chosen films. During the Winter term, film selections are listed over an eight week period. Discussions are held with Honors advisor and film critic John Cantu (jcantu), following the viewing. Previous selections included National Velvet, The Graduate, Godzilla vs Mothra, and A Hard Day's Night.

Students viewing and discussing four films throughout the term will earn one SHA point. Those viewing and discussing all eight films will earn two SHA points. 

We know that many of you express general interest in social justice and specific concerns for equity, inclusion and basic fairness. We agree that it is deeply important and are committed to our own learning. Honors DEI is an opportunity for all of us to challenge ourselves to explore, self-reflect, and engage with diversity of thought, belief, and identity.

Participants engage in a 6-8 week experience involving independent, individual reflection and group discussion. The self-paced structure and range of topics enables participants to flexibly engage in ways that fit their schedules and challenge them to explore issues that may be unfamiliar to them. Students who complete all the components of the experience are eligible to earn 2 engagement points towards the Sophomore Honors Award. Students can participate in Honors DEI a maximum of two times for engagement points.

Certainly you are reading for your classes, but how often do you have time to read for pleasure and relaxation without worrying about grades or deadlines? Want to be able to engage in conversation about current literature, outside the academic? Join other Honors community members who love to read for pleasure. Honors students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.

SHA Engagement Points:  Students interested in earning engagement points though Honors Reads can earn a maximum of three engagement points by participating in three Reads (reading three books). Students are also welcomed and encouraged to participate just for the pleasure of reading!
