Term Withdrawal

If a student has not registered for the term, they do not need to do anything as they are disenrolling by not registering. There are no formal “withdrawal” or “leave of absence” procedures. If the student leaves in good academic standing, they are eligible for readmission at any time.

If a student has registered for the term, they may disenroll by dropping all courses in Wolverine Access. Students may also disenroll by contacting the Office of the Registrar. E-mail the request to wolverineservices@umich.edu (please include full name, id number and term). Students must do this before the first day of classes to avoid being charged any tuition or fees. If you are unsure when classes start, you can check the academic calendar.

Once the term has started, students can initiate the request via the My Advising website; instructors are not contacted. No registration will appear on the student’s transcript for that term. A student whose disenrollment occurs after the start of the semester (and before the end of the drop/add period) will be assessed a disenrollment fee plus a registration fee. Consult the Office of the Registrar for fee amounts.

After the drop/add period, a student may request a term withdrawal for any reason through the last day of class. To do so, the student must complete the “Request for Term Withdrawal” form available in MyAdvising. A term withdrawal after the drop/add deadline results in the “withdrew” notation to appear on the transcripts. A W grade will be assessed to all courses for the term of withdrawal, including those students in their first term at the University of Michigan. Neither credits toward a degree program nor honor points are awarded for Ws. The amount of tuition due varies based on the Office of the Registrar’s tuition calendar.

Students must contact a member of the Honors Academic Board (HAB), which includes the director, associate director, assistant director, or any Honors advisor. A member of the HAB must initiate your request; instructors will be contacted and must submit the student's last date of participation. Students who withdraw after the ninth week of a term will be required to obtain permission from the Honors Academic Board before continuing in the College. 

After the last day of classes, you cannot withdraw except by successful petition to the Honors Academic Affairs. Retroactive withdrawals are rare exceptions and are only granted in extraordinary circumstances. To be eligible to petition, you must have documentation of non-academic factors that prevented you from finishing classes and prevented you from requesting the withdrawal before the end of the term.
