2025 Translations Contest Winner

Anthony Asmus and his father perform his translation as a song.

Every year, Contexts for Classics invites students in all departments and programs (graduate and undergraduate) across the University of Michigan to take part in its Classical Translations Contest. We know that there are many people inspired by the beauty of other languages who wish to render them more freely and creatively than classwork often involves. This contest is intended to highlight the work of students who are interested in the process of translation as a creative enterprise.

This year the prize was awarded to Anthony Asmus, for his translation of Virgil, Aeneid 3.203–231. Anthony, or A.J., is a rising senior in the College of LSA studying Computer Science.  Upon completion of his undergraduate degree, he hopes to find a career that combines the classics with the technical skills learned through his major.  Outside of academic pursuits, Anthony enjoys playing folk music, crocheting, and reading.

Please click here to watch a video of A.J. (accompanied by his father, Tony) performing his translation at the Department of Classical Studies Awards Ceremony in the Michigan League on April 22, 2025. Thank you to A.J. for sharing his work and his talent with the community!
