Korean Foundation Graduate Fellowships

The Korea Foundation Graduate Fellowships are awarded to incoming graduate students at the University of Michigan who plan to focus their graduate work on Korea. The Nam Center will help recruit outstanding students to the university. Students must be nominated by U-M departments or schools in order to be considered. Fellowship awards up to $50,000 will be given to eligible incoming students in Korean Studies.

The fellowship provides first-year assistance for students enrolled in doctoral-level courses and/or concentrating on study areas of humanities or social sciences related to Korea.

If a qualified incoming PhD student cannot be identified for first-year assistance, the fellowship will be used to support a continuing PhD student who has not previously received a Korea Foundation Fellowship.

For incoming Students:
Recipients will receive up to $50,000 in support for the first year of their studies.

Eligibility and Requirements:

• Both U.S. citizens and non-U.S. citizens may apply.
• Recipient’s work must be on Korea in Humanities or Social Sciences for the duration of the doctorate work at the University of Michigan: e.g. history, literature, religion, culture, politics, media, contemporary topics, etc.
• Recipients must be registered full time (at least 9 credit hours) during the fall and winter terms. Exception can be granted if the recipient is a continuing Ph.D. candidate. His/her academic plan must be included in the Statement of Academic Purpose.
• Deferral: The KF Graduate fellowship is tenable only for the year that it is awarded. It cannot be deferred to a future year.
• If you become a KF fellow, the following should be observed:
  • KF fellows cannot work more than 10 hours during the fellowship: The purpose of the fellowship is to provide students with funding so that they concentrate on their study; therefore fellowship recipients will be limited on the number of hours they are allowed to work during the fellowship period.
  • KF fellows are required to give a presentation and submit a summary of their research work by the close of the award year.
  • KF fellows are required to complete a survey regarding their career paths for a period of time following graduation.
  • KF fellows are required to participate in the various activities of the center, including the center lecture series, film series, and special events.

Selection Criteria:
The KF Fellowships are selected on the basis of academic merit and how well their proposed study fits into overall academic and career goals, and priorities defined by the Center and the Korea Foundation.

Application Procedure:

1. The Chair of the department or Director of the Graduate Program submits a letter of nomination for an incoming graduate student by the deadline.
2. The department submits a copy of the nominee's application packet (including CV, academic statement of purpose, and personal statement) and the department's acceptance letter to the student.
3. This fellowship does not replace any part fo the existing funding offer.
4. Should the student be awarded the fellowship, the department will need to submit a revised offer letter.
