Description: This seminar explores important new works on the history of modern Korea, paying close attention to interactions between culture, society, and intellectuals, as well as how Korea has fit into regional and global patterns. The focus of the first part of the semester will be the colonial era (1910-1945); that of the second, longer part will be the postliberation era (1945-present). Students will write weekly response papers and complete a final project that will be due at the end of the semester. The primary objective of this course is to provide students with a strong foundation for future research and teaching on twentieth-century Korea.
