Through their own lenses, local women took photographs of their experiences of the Great East Japan earthquakes, tsunami, and nuclear disasters. The PhotoVoice project, a participatory action research effort, is being conducted in collaboration with women’s non-governmental organizations in northern Japan. Beyond unspeakable destruction and losses, their photos and voices, filled with affection for their land, ocean, people, and community, interrogate the disparate societal responses to the disaster and articulate visions for the future.
