Abstract: This lecture focuses on proleptic articulations of Zainichi identity in the 1950s and 1960s and account for the absence of a well-articulated ethnic identity of Koreans in Japan. In particular, the focus will be on the 1958 Komatsugawa Incident and the 1968 Kim Hiro Incident to illuminate the conditions and experiences of the Korean population in postwar Japan.Bio: John Lie was born in South Korea, grew up in Japan and Hawaii and attended Harvard University where he received an A.B., A.M., and Ph.D. Currently, he is the Class of 1959 Professor and Dean of International and Area Studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
