The Center for Japanese Studies presents Ann Arbor Japan Week! Join us June 17th through June 23rd for a week of Japan-related programming designed for families and youth. All events are free and open to the public.
Ann Arbor Japan Week will kick off with a free, family-friendly anime screening on Sunday, June 17th at 1pm at the Michigan Theater. This year’s programming will include activities such as sushi-making, family arts activities at the University of Michigan Museum of Art, Japanese arts and crafts workshops at the Downtown Branch of the Ann Arbor District Library, martial arts at the YMCA and Ann Arbor Summer Festival, and ikebana at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. There will also be restaurant specials throughout Ann Arbor Japan Week: 10% off food and 50% off house sake at Nagomi Sushi, and 10% off at Slurping Turtle--just mention Ann Arbor Japan Week!

Ann Arbor Japan Week Kickoff film screening of A Letter to Momo at the Michigan Theater, 603 E. Liberty St., 1:00pm
MONDAY, 6/18
Ann Arbor Y Judo Club - Beginner Workshop, YMCA Studio C, 400 W. Washington St., Ann Arbor, 5:30-6:30pm. Learn about the sport of Judo including basic stances and techniques and workout. Wear a judogi (judo uniform) or a loose fitting, long sleeved, t-shirt or sweat shirt and a loose fitting pants. Make sure that your finger and toe nails are trimmed. RSVP required here (search for the keyword "judo"). Bring a valid photo ID or YMCA membership card.
Fiber Arts Lab: Sashiko Embroidery, AADL Downtown Library: Secret Lab, 343 S. Fifth Ave., 7-8:30pm, grades 6 to adult. This week Fiber Arts Lab will be demonstrating the basics of sashiko stitching, a traditional embroidery style from Japan. They will provide everything you need to get started. Stop in and learn the basics. Or, feel free to bring along another project you've been working on (knitting, crochet, or embroidery) and hang out with us while enjoying the company of other crafters. No prior experience necessary.
TUESDAY, 6/19
Japanese Flower Arranging Workshop with Ikebana International Detroit Chapter, Matthaei Botanical Gardens room 125, ages 8 and up, 2-3:30pm and 4-5:30pm. Please note: these workshops have filled and registration is now closed.
Kokedama moss ball making, AADL Downtown Library: Secret Lab, 7-8:30pm, grades 6 to adult.
WEDNESDAY, 6/20
Intro Workshop on Japanese Writing and Calligraphy, Weiser Hall room 455, 3-4:00pm.
Letterpress Lab with Japanese Crests, AADL Downtown Library: Secret Lab, 343 S. Fifth Ave., 6-8:30pm, grades 6 to adult. Print and learn about Japanese crests! Materials provided.
THURSDAY, 6/21
Family Japanese Art Studio, University of Michigan Museum of Art Multi-Purpose Room, 11am-1pm & 2-4pm. This event is fully subscribed: please click here to be placed on the waitlist. Ages 6 and up; children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Japanese Video Games, University of Michigan Library Computer & Video Game Archive, Duderstadt Center Room B474, 2281 Bonisteel Blvd., 4-6pm. Come to the gaming center to enjoy playing games on the Nintendo Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 64, PS3, PS Vita, Sega Saturn, Wonderswan, Super Famicom and Atari systems.
Temaki-sushi workshop with Chef Nakano Kaede, AADL Downtown Library: Multi-Purpose Room, 343 S. Fifth Ave., 6-7:30pm. Demonstration of Japanese style temaki (hand-rolled) sushi by Chef Nakano, followed by a make-your-own workshop.

Japanese Summer Festival (Natsu Matsuri) Games, Ann Arbor Summer Festival KidZone Tent, 5-8pm, ages 4-14.
Iaidō (居合道): Introduction to the Way of the Japanese Sword, Ann Arbor Summer Festival Retreat Series, Power Center Lawn, 5-6pm. Participants will learn about the sword and its role in Japanese culture over centuries. Attendees will use sticks to practice some basic exercises related to sword handling and use.
SATURDAY, 6/23
Musical Performance by Godaiko Drummers, Downtown Library multi-purpose room, 343 S. Fifth, 10-11am.
Storytime at the Museum: Japanese Art, University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). Meet in front of the UMMA store, 11:15am-12:30pm. Ages 3-6. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No registration required.
