I have been a Chinese Lecturer in the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures (ALC) at the University of Michigan since 2001. I served as the Interim Director of the Chinese Language Program during the 2010-2011 academic year and as the Director of the Chinese Language Program from 2011 to 2015. I was the ALC Director of the Language Program Committee from 2013 to 2014. I have been a Faculty Associate in the Lieberthal – Rogel Center for Chinese Studies at the University of Michigan since 2011. From 2002 to 2005, I was the Coordinator of the HSK site at the University of Michigan. After that, I was the Coordinator of a project called “New and Computer-Delivered Chinese Placement Test Design”, which replaced HSK at the University of Michigan. I received my M.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1998 and B.A. from Beijing Language and Culture University in 1991. From 1991 to 1996, I worked at BLCU as a Chinese Lecturer and Research Associate, winning the Award for Outstanding Teachers of Beijing in 1995.
My research interests center on the error analysis of interlingual sentences and syntactical features and the approach of Learner-Centered language education. I have given numerous invited talks and lectures at conferences and universities in the U.S. and China. I was the chair of the panel entitled “Transforming Knowledge to Skill with Quality Comprehensive Input” at the Chinese Language Teachers Association 2008 Conference. I was the Deputy Editor for A Trip to China: Spoken Chinese at the Intermediate and Advanced Level, a multi-media textbook and courseware (University of Nanjing Press, 2014) and the co-author of textbook A Shortcut - Intensive Reading & Writing in Modern Chinese (BLCU Press, 2002). I was the translator of the book The University of Michigan & China 1845 – 2010 (Bentley Historical Library and Lieberthal – Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, 2010). More than 10 of my research papers have been published in core journals.
The slogan in my language classroom is “You can do it, I can help”, which reflects my belief and understanding of the essence of language teaching and learning.
