S.B.S.C. Collegiate Lecturer, Hindi and Punjabi Languages; Teaching Professor
About
Teaching interests and projects:
I am deeply passionate about Punjabi and Hindi literature and developing curricula for both languages. I have created numerous instructional materials featuring movies and songs to portray language and culture.
Some of my projects include “Exploring Social and Cultural Themes Through Advertising” (2021), and “Using Film to Teach Language and Culture” for Hindi and Punjabi (2012 and 2013). I also created a website "Punjabi Audio Conversations'' (2009), for beginner and intermediate level students. Many of these projects were supported by grants from the College of Literature, Science and the Arts. In recent years, I have been incorporating games into class time with the typical Kahoot and Quizlet platforms, while also customizing online games modeled after the FunEmployed card game. It is very satisfying to see students enjoying class and having fun in Punjabi and Hindi languages.
My publications include the textbook “Conversational Punjabi”, a series of conversations and exercises. I am also a co-author in the translation of “Unified Roots of Farmers” from English to Punjabi.
I am a certified Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) tester for Hindi. I regularly participate in national conferences and workshops at the University of Michigan to share my work with other colleagues.
