The Department encourages students who are committed to language study to apply for language fellowships at the University of Michigan. Although the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures does not house any competitive awards, other units on campus do. For example, the Southeast Asian Language Scholarship for Undergraduate and Graduate Students provides funding for students studying Filipino, Indonesian, Thai, or Vietnamese. The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship, administered through the UM International Institute, awards scholarships to students who study high demand and less commonly taught languages identified by the U.S. government. Students should speak with their instructors and academic advisors to help identify other opportunities available to them.
