As a professionally trained ballet and modern dancer, my studies and experiences of China have always been mediated through dance. I have conducted extensive fieldwork in Yunnan Province on the wide-ranging dance practices found in the city of Kunming, and have also physically studied and performed many different styles of Chinese dance. Combining more traditional forms of research with the active learning of Chinese dance styles has helped to develop both my intellectual and kinesthetic understanding of dance in China.
My current research interests are in modern Chinese dance history; aesthetics and embodiment; theories of kinesthetic understanding; and the social gospel movement in China. My dissertation is focused on the imbricated relationship between "modern" and "ethnic" dance forms and international protestant progressivism during the Republican Era.
