Doctoral Student in Asian Languages and Cultures
About
Gerald always wanted to study the Vietnam War (American War) but did not find an approach that interested him until he examined Korea's involvement in the war. Asian Studies allowed Gerald to research the war and its current impact on both Korea and Vietnam without the constraints of being solely rooted in a single discipline while allowing him to use his personal experience with war in general. Through Asian Studies, he can incorporate Asian cinema, literature, and borrow methods of ethnography and oral history recording to form his project - and future research - into a more fulfilling endeavour.
Gerald is able to learn from the interdisciplinary researchers within the Asian Languages and Cultures department as well as consider methods from other departments. This allows him to grow as a student and accumulate knowledge he can use to assist his colleagues. Asian Studies is Gerald's ideal vehicle to process his research and work with a more diverse pool of fellow scholars.
