I have always been passionate about Chinese literature since I was a child. For me, Chinese literature is not only a form of art, but also a way of self-cultivation, a set of principles on which I depend under difficult circumstances. My love for literature motivated me to continue my quest in university as I selected translation as my major because of the belief I cultivated from my reading - that languages and literatures from different cultures can find common ground and that people of different origins can truly connect.
My previous research explores the role of the concept of qing (love, feeling, emotion) and self-expression in Ming Qing fiction. My doctoral research will continue to center on late imperial fictional works and stretch to their commentaries and English translations. The interdisciplinarity of UM creates a possibility for me to incorporate translation studies, a somewhat more newly discovered discipline, into the well-established domain of Chinese literature.
