Pizza, History, Purpose and Usage

Flatbread was essentially an edible plate used by different cultures. Pizza came into being via Naples. A seaside filled with the working poor, the necessity of a cheap, and fast, food was the mother of the pizza as we would come to know it. Despised by the bourgeoisie as lowly, until an alleged PR story changed it all by attributing a certain pizza to the Queen Margherita.

1. The Ancient "Pre-Game" (Flatbread with Stuff on It)

Before there was "pizza," humans figured out that baking flatbread and putting food on top of it was a great way to eat without needing plates.

  • The Persians: Soldiers in King Darius the Great’s army (5th century BC) baked flatbreads on their shields and covered them with cheese and dates.

  • The Greeks: They ate plakous, a flatbread topped with herbs, onion, garlic, and cheese.

  • The Romans: Virgil’s Aeneid literally describes heroes eating flatbreads and then eating the bread itself, prompting someone to yell, "Look! We are even eating our plates!"

But none of this was pizza. For that, we need Naples.

Some boring details

The purpose of lorem ipsum is to create a natural looking block of text (sentence, paragraph, page, etc.) that doesn't distract from the layout. A practice not without controversy, laying out pages with meaningless filler text can be very useful when the focus is meant to be on design, not content.

Pizza's history spans from ancient Mediterranean flatbreads to a global fast-food staple. It evolved into its modern form in 18th-century Naples, Italy, as an affordable street food for the working class. Today, it is celebrated worldwide in countless regional and international variations. [1, 2, 3, 4]
