Any student admitted to, or currently enrolled in, a U-M graduate program is eligible to apply for an STS Graduate Certificate. Applicants need at least a "B" average in their graduate or (for entering students) undergraduate coursework. Applications are accepted as early as the second semester of enrollment and are considered on a rolling basis. Once accepted into the program, students are considered "Candidates" for the Certificate until it is conferred at graduation.
Required Coursework (12 Total Credits)
- The core STS Graduate Seminar, History/STS 619, SI 719, AC 620, Anthro 658 Knowledge/Power/Practice in Science, Technology, and Medicine, is required. Offered nearly every year. 3 credits.
- Two electives chosen from the list of pre-approved STS Certificate courses or else approved by the Director of Graduate Studies. (Credit varies; must total at least 6).
- Three semesters' enrollment in STS 571, a one-credit course requiring attendance at STeMS Lectures (occasional Mondays, 4:00-5:30pm).
Up to six of the twelve credit hours may include courses that are required for the student’s graduate or professional degree. The STS Graduate Director may require additional coursework or other preparation.
To apply, submit an application form along with the required supporting documents (letter of interest, most recent transcript, and approval from an advisor or faculty mentor). We prefer that application materials be submitted as electronic files; please send them to the STS administrative staff sts-staff@umich.edu.
Once you have received a letter of acceptance from the program, you should complete Rackham's online Add a Degree application (the STS program code is 01777). The new online process will ask that you first show approval from an advisor or mentor in your home department and will then send notice to the STS grad coordinator to approve the addition of the certificate to your transcript.
