2025-26 Graduate Student Research Fellow
About
Tuğçe Akgül is a PhD candidate in the Interdepartmental Program in Ancient History. She is a social historian specializing in classical and early Hellenistic Greece, with research interests in gender, economy, and slavery. Her work focuses on marginalized groups and the degrees of marginality, particularly in relation to state formation and imperial structures. Akgül explores questions such as: How were generations and socio-economic systems in Greek society sustained at the expense of certain populations? How were identities and socially accepted/internalized emotions, practices, and forms of knowledge constructed to ensure continuity? She aims to answer these questions from a multidimensional perspective by incorporating different aspects of social reproduction and care.
During the fellowship period, Akgül will continue her dissertation research and work on developing a theoretical framework for studying marginalized communities. Her analysis draws on insights from women’s and gender studies, disability studies, and critical race theory.
