Marisa Eisenberg
From Reviewer E: “Marissa [sic] is one of the most outstanding scientists in the world”. At Complex Systems, we concur. One of the glowing reviewers comments in Professor Eisenberg’s promotion package. Many focus on not only her vast knowledge, but on her success in applying her scientific work to state and national policy. “Marisa is among the best and brightest mathematical epidemiologists I know. Most impressively, she is recognized for contributing knowledge along the whole spectrum, from mathematical theory to very applied public health solutions.” (Reviewer C)
The package also highlights all of her work during the pandemic, developing public dashboards, working with the State of Michigan in many capacities including transmission modeling and forecasting: “Her current research into wastewater modeling has led to her appointment to the National Academy of Sciences Committee on evaluating the potential for a national wastewater-monitoring system for public health.”
The package also highlights her success in funding having received a plethora of CDC, NSF, Rockefeller Foundation and other grants; as well as her excellent publishing record and her teaching and curriculum efforts that have helped expand Complex Systems course availability to a larger segment of the undergraduate population.
We are so proud to have her among us.
Jordan Horowitz
Dr. Horowitz has wasted no time establishing himself as a leader in both Biophysics and Complex Systems, taking on many roles and outreach/service activities in addition to the exceptional research each of the Reviewers raved about. Dr. Horowitz has been lauded for his innovative work in the classroom ‘He augmented both courses through CRLT workshops on inclusive assignments, accessibility in Canvas, and flipping the classroom, which he integrated into his teaching."He has introduced a peer review system for end of term work. His outreach work was specifically heralded “including NSF-funded (ongoing) work with UM’s Museum of Natural History to engage the public with the scientific topics used in his research. This five-year project incorporates scientific communication, hands-on experiences for the public to engage in research, and a career-outreach program aimed at middle schools in three Detroit-area communities.” That is just the beginning of his lengthy record of service..
On his research: “It is anticipated that Professor Horowitz will become a true leader in his research field far-from-equilibrium statistical physics and will continue to have impact on the field through his scholarly writings.” Reviewer A noting “this kind of effort is defining the state of the art for analysis of nonequilibrium biological systems. Dr. Horowitz is publishing in important Journals and his work is well cited.”
We invite you to read the Promotion Recommendations in the link above to find more detail about these two outstanding individuals and academics. The packages are only missing the fact that they are both outstanding people to work with. The Center for the Study of Complex Systems is fortunate to have them both in our midst.
