Undergraduate Students

Welcome to the Global Islamic Studies Center!

Are you interested in Islamic Studies? Are you curious about the history and culture of the Islamic religion and Muslim societies?  Would you like to examine the political, economic, and social transitions taking place in this field? The Global Islamic Studies Center offers a variety of opportunities to learn, research and explore Islam:

Our minor in Islamic Studies began in 2011 and continues to grow. With an interdisciplinary approach, this is the only academic program at U-M with a sole focus on Islam not confined to a specific region.  There are no prerequisites or language requirements. We encourage all students interested in learning about Islam to speak with an advisor at the International Institute to learn more!

Our funding provides undergraduate student organizations at U-M the resources to help make their events happen! GISC is delighted to co-sponsor any event that promotes the understanding of global Islamic culture and Muslim societies worldwide, with preference for events that include an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural, or multi-confessional dimension. We also provide fellowships up to $500 to pursue individual research projects, virtual/local internships, or to attend/present research that explores topics in Islam and Muslim communities (this includes language learning courses) either locally or digitally.

Our internships offer the opportunity to intern at the Felicity Foundation, in a vibrant Islamic-centered, service-oriented, campus community.

Our programming brings in leading faculty and scholars in the field. All lectures and events are free and open to the public. Undergraduate students are welcomed and encouraged to attend these events—it’s a great way to get involved and network with faculty. Please visit our events page for a current list of activities.
