The previous “General Biology” major has been updated and will now be “Biology, Health and Society.”  The redesign creates an interdisciplinary major that allows students to learn the core concepts in biology while exploring their impacts on society.  Courses on societal impacts include those addressing public health here in the U.S. or around the world, the history of medicine, environmental and ecological changes, bioethics and many more.
 
Current General Biology majors will have the option to keep their current major requirements or switch to the new BHS major.  Starting Winter 2018, General Biology will no longer be available to declare.

FAQ's from current General Biology majors:

 

What do I need to do to select the new major?
Make an appointment with an advisor after January 1, 2018, to "re-declare" and discuss how the changes will impact your course requirements.

What should I do if I don't want the new major?
Short answer:  Nothing.  All students who are currently declared as "General Biology" majors will maintain the major name and requirements in place when they declared. 

If I switch to Biology, Health & Society, can I switch back to General Biology in the winter?
No.  Any "new" declares after January 1 will declare into Biology, Health & Society.
