Admissions

Thank you for your interest in the Applied Physics Program. The program is designed for students intending to pursue coursework and research leading to the Ph.D. degree.

There are several components to the application process. To be considered for admission, all materials must be completed and received by the application deadline which is January 5th.

• Official transcripts of all academic records
• Statement of Purpose
• Personal Statement
• Three letters of recommendation.

Students from non-English speaking countries are required to demonstrate proficiency in English via the various examinations such as the TOEFL. To see minimum scores for admission, please visit Rackham Language Guidelines.

The admission committee's review of the application is holistic. The applicant's grade point average, research experience, recommendations and language proficiency are considered in the admission decision. GRE scores (general and subject) are not required for admission and will not be used in the admissions process. Further, the committee looks for the applicant to have a solid foundation in basic physics with at least 15 credit hours of introductory and intermediate coursework in classical mechanics, statistical physics, electricity and magnetism, and quantum physics. Applications are processed for fall term admission.

The deadline for applications is January 5th for both domestic and international applicants.

A completed application and transcripts of all previous academic records; personal statement; statement of purpose; three letters of recommendation with at least two of the letters from an academic institution. 

Students will be admitted into the Imes-Moore Fellows Program based on their:

• Academic promise
• Potential to benefit from a broad-based training program
• Contribution to enhancing the diversity of students in applied physics 
• Meet the Eligibility and Evaluative Criteria of Rackham Graduate School - Rackham Merit Fellowship

This last criterion will be assessed by the student's background in one or more of the following areas:

• An educational, cultural, or geographical background that is underrepresented in applied physics
• Demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity
• Experience of financial hardship
• First-generation U.S. citizen or first-generation college graduate

Students admitted to the Applied Physics PhD program receive financial aid for five years, assuming satisfactory progress is made, which includes tuition fees, a monthly stipend, and health insurance.

The University of Michigan provides full support for the Imes-Moore master's degree students which includes tuition fees, a monthly stipend, and health insurance.
