Minor in Writing students and Peer Writing Consultants win big in 2018
Meagan Malm, 2018 Writing Minor graduate, was the recipient of the 2018 Wallenberg Fellowship. The Wallenberg Fellowship is given each spring to a graduating senior with exceptional promise and accomplishment to service and the public good.
The fellowship will provide Malm with $25,000 to carry out an independent project of learning or exploration anywhere in the world during the year after her graduation. She plans to go to Tanzania and live in Dar-es Salaam and Mtwara and study the role mobile phones play in reducing poverty.
"I want to gain an understanding on how the mobile phones are used and do they serve as resources to alleviate poverty," she said.
Chetali Jain, 2018 Writing Minor graduate and Peer Writing Consultant, was awarded a 2018 Bonderman Fellowship. Bonderman fellows receive $20,000 each to travel to a minimum of 6 countries in two regions of their choosing over the course of 8 months. While abroad, they are expected to immerse themselves in independent and enriching explorations. The Bonderman Fellowship is a prestigious program at U-M that attracts talented, innovative, and ambitious scholars who are eager to experience intercultural realities around the globe.
Zofia Ferki, current Sweetland Peer Writing Consultant, received the Matt Kelley/Granader Family Prize for Excellence in First-Year Writing for her essay "As Time Ticks By" written in the Residential College's CORE100 course "The Personal Essay" taught by Leslie Stainton. The Matt Kelley/Granader Family Prize for Excellence in First-Year Writing is awarded to the best writing produced among all students in First-Year Writing courses at U-M. Receipients receive $1000 and their work in printed in Excellence in First-Year Writing prize books.

Laura Dzubay, current Sweetland Peer Writing Consultant, received the Arthur Miller Award of the University of Michigan Club of New York Scholarhsip Fund from the 2018 Hopwood Awards. The Arthur Miller Award is awarded to a University of Michigan student, of sophomore or junior standing, who has demonstrated writing talent in the area of drama, screenplay, fiction, or poetry.
