Former Sweetland Peer Writing Consultant Layne Vandenberg was one of 29 U-M students awarded 2015-2016 Fulbright scholarships to study, conduct research or teach English overseas. Layne who earned her bachelor's degree in international relations and Spanish, with a minor in global media studies, was heavily involved in Sweetland's Peer Writing Consultant program. In addition to her work as a writing tutor, she presented at the National Conference for Peer Tutors in Writing in 2013, worked as a special multilingual tutor, and served as a mentor in the Peer Writing Consultant program.

She is currently researching how preparations for the 2016 Olympic Games are affecting people who live in the slums of Rio de Janeiro. She is also researching the impact of the Paralympic Games in September on the disabled community. This year marks the third year in a row U-M is the top public university for student Fulbright recipients. Read more at the U-M Record.
