Undergradute Writing Tutors

Our Writing Workshop is staffed by U-M Sweetland faculty and our Peer Writing Centers are staffed by U-M undergraduate students through our Peer Writing Consultation Program. Because of the way these services are structured, we currently do not offer independent tutoring positions or employ graduate students in these positions. 

If you are an undergradute student at U-M interested in working at our Peer Writing Centers, please see our Peer Writing Consultant Program page for details on becoming a paid Writing Consultant. Starting pay is $15/hr with opportunities for raises as well as other paid tutoring opportunites. Consultants generally work 4-8 hours/week with opportunities for additional hours.

Undergraduate Internships

Sweetland's Summer Internships are usually offered to graduating Sweetland Minor in Writing students and Peer Writing Consultants. Internships will not be available for Summer 2022.

Duties 

Interns work closely with each other and Sweetland staff and faculty on several writing center initiatives, which may include but are not limited to: 

  • visiting classes and campus organizations to promote Sweetland services; 
  • collaborating on special projects (e.g. podcasts, videos, text for website, Peer Writing Consultant Program materials, Minor in Writing materials, online writing and tutoring resources, etc.); 
  • and other projects dependent on the interns’ specific interests and skills. 

Some general office work, such as filing and making copies, may also be required. 

Desired qualifications

Interns should possess excellent oral and written communication skills; be able to multitask, prioritize, think creatively, take initiative, work both independently and collaboratively, and be proactive, innovative, organized, and intellectually curious. 

Strong interest in composition studies and writing center work, good design sense, and strong new media skills are required. Experience conducting research is desired. Familiarity with some of the following applications preferred: Adobe Acrobat Professional, Adobe Creative Suite, Google Apps, and iMovie.
