Support RLL Today!

The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures traces its origins back to the mid-1800s. We have the distinct honor to continue to effect students’ lives over a century and a half later. Language learning, critical thinking, creativity, and the ability to take a wider view of the world forms the very core of a liberal arts education. Together, they enable the next generation to navigate our increasingly global society. Through our curriculum, our students become proficient in Catalan, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish while developing a genuine understanding of the diverse cultures and literatures where these languages are spoken.

Each fall we welcome over 3,000 students into our language classes and offer over 190 elementary language courses, as well as diverse and interesting courses in Italian and Portuguese. We accept some of the best Ph.D. candidates from around the world into our doctoral program. Each year we invite top scholars for guest lectures and conferences from all over the globe. We also support a wide variety of initiatives for our undergraduate and graduate student initiatives including study abroad programs and international internships.

None of this would be possible without your support.

Your donations to RLL make a crucial difference in our ability to offer assistance to students both in terms of how many students we can support and how much support we can provide. Our students use the scholarships, fellowships, grants, and stipends, that you continue to make possible, to do a variety of activities that improve their language skills and cultural understanding, working with organizations including Human Rights Watch, the U.S. Department of State, Emergency Relief Services, General Motors, and Teach for America. Many of our students go on to have distinguished careers after graduation.
