Miranda Banks is the John H. Mitchell Visiting Professor in Media Entertainment. She will be teaching the Department of Film, Television, and Media during Fall 2023. Dr. Banks is is department chair and associate professor of Film, Television, and Media Studies at Loyola Marymount University’s School of Film and Television. Her primary area of research is the American film and television industries, with a specific focus on power dynamics in creative production.
She is author of The Writers: A History of American Screenwriters and Their Guild (Rutgers 2015), and coeditor of two Production Studies collections (Routledge 2009 and 2015), and the forthcoming Media Industries in Crisis: What COVID Unmasked (Routledge, 2024). She has been published in Media Industries, Television and New Media, and the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies.
Banks is a leading scholar on the Writers Guild of America and has been featured on television, radio, and podcasts as an area expert during the 2023 WGA strike. She is a founding member and Co-Director of EDIT Media: Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Teaching Media. For their work to make film and media production classrooms across the country more equitable and inclusive, she was co-recipient of the Society of Cinema and Media Studies 2022 Innovative Pedagogy Award.
