About
Emma Soberano is a Doctoral Candidate in English Language and Literature. Her research into 19th century British literature is interdisciplinary, and encompasses race and empire, science history, ecology, epistemology, and place. She is particularly interested in place-based forms of knowledge, colonial epistemes and power structures, and the operation of racial logics within the impirial metropole.
She received her B.A. in English and General Science with a focus on mathematics from Grinnell College, where she engaged in research on 19th century sensation fiction in the English department as well as neuroscience research on motivational and apetitive behaviors in rats. While at Michigan, she has examined 19th century prose and poetry through the lens of various scientific theories, including ecology and quantum physics. She served as an Editorial Assistant for the journal Victorian Literature and Culture and presented her research at conferences including INCS, MMLA, and MUSE.
