Summer 2021 EAP Online

Application Deadline Extended to June 17!

The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Online program offers graduate students admitted to the University of Michigan for the fall a unique opportunity to prepare for academic, cultural, and professional success before they begin their programs. Join other new Michigan international graduate students in this rigorous and engaging online program. You will improve your ability to use English in a university environment. You will learn about U.S. academic culture and campus life at the University of Michigan.

  • EAP Online is highly-interactive, with numerous opportunities for real-time language practice.
  • All course materials and activities are structured with a global audience in mind so that you can participate from any time zone anywhere in the world.

Program Overview

  • All course materials and activities are structured with a global audience in mind so that you can participate from any time zone anywhere in the world.
  • You can complete most assignments at any time during the week no matter what time zone you are in, as long as you meet weekly deadlines.
  • You will also have frequent opportunities to practice your spoken English and receive feedback in real time via frequent meetings with instructors and fellow students in small and large groups. These meetings will be scheduled to accommodate the schedules of participants.
  • Optional individual speaking consultations will offer you the chance to focus on your own individual speaking issues such as fluency, confidence, or pronunciation.
  • You will build friendships and begin to build a social network before you arrive on campus. You will gain insight into U.S. culture, make friends, and get to know the Ann Arbor area virtually.

Program Structure

The EAP program is built on the ELI’s renowned research-based English for Academic Purposes curriculum that prepares students for study at top U.S. research universities. It  includes the following course components:

  • Introduction to Academic Writing
  • Introduction to Academic Speaking
  • Language, Culture, and Community at the University of Michigan
  • Individual Speaking Consultations (optional)

You will access the EAP program through the U-M Canvas site. In Canvas, you will have access to the general program site and the three courses. This online program is asynchronous, which means that you will be able to complete your work at your own schedule. It is designed for U-M students who may be in any corner of the world this summer; therefore, the workload and deadlines allow for flexibility and ample time for completing weekly assignments.

Time Commitment

You should plan to spend 12-15 hour each week minimum on completing assignments and communicating with other students and your teachers. A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who fulfill all program requirements.

2-3 hours of additional optional activities, including synchronous or real-time meetings with EAP faculty, are available for additional practice for students whose schedules permit. These will be scheduled individually with each student according to their schedules.

Students who participate in all required and optional activities should plan to commit 15-18 hours per week to the program.

Program Benefits

By participating in the EAP program, you  will become more confident using English in academic and professional contexts, prepare for the rigors of your U-M graduate program, and begin to build your English-speaking professional network. Specifically, you will:

  • Polish your spoken and written English
  • Improve your control of the standard conventions of academic writing
  • Identify and correct your own errors in speaking and writing
  • Learn to introduce yourself and your scholarship via short presentations
  • Develop strategies to establish yourself as a member of your academic community
  • Recognize important aspects of American academic culture
  • Learn about life and culture on the U-M campus
  • Become familiar with U-M resources to support your scholarship
  • Make friends and begin to build social and professional networks

Are You Hoping to Be in Ann Arbor this Summer?

For students who are able to travel to the U.S. and will be residing in Ann Arbor during the program, ELI faculty, staff, and students will offer optional in-person gatherings (as safety conditions permit and U-M guidelines permit) to welcome you to Michigan and help you begin to get to know the Ann Arbor area. Please keep us posted and let us know when you arrive!
