Your education doesn't have to end in the classroom. For many LSA students, pursuing a spring or summer internship is an ideal way to gain valuable, hands-on experience in their field of interest. Combined with your degree from the College of LSA, a great internship experience can help you stand out from the crowd during your post-grad job search and arm you with the tools you need to succeed.
Thanks to generous donations from UM alumni and supporters, the LSA Internship Scholarship can help make these life-changing opportunities a reality for all students, regardless of their background. Whether you're planning to intern in the United States or abroad, read on to learn more about our Internship Scholarship program.
The LSA Internship Scholarship supports LSA students pursuing a spring or summer internship experience. Scholarship funds can be used to assist with the costs associated with completing an internship. These could include housing, travel, and other supplies (such as a business suit).
Please note that LSA Internship Scholarships are intended to support students during their internship experience and are not meant to supplement travel outside of the internship destination.
The LSA Internship Scholarship varies depending on the cost of a student's internship experience and their financial need. Award amounts can range anywhere from $500 to $5,000.
The US-Based and International Internship applications open on January 1st and close on May 24th. Applicants will receive notifications on a rolling basis up until the beginning of June. Eligible applicants should expect to hear from the review committee no more than one month after submitting their application.

All eligible LSA students are encouraged to apply through our Internship Scholarship application. Follow the link below to get started. There are two steps.
Step one: Begin by completing the general application. When asked which scholarship program you are applying to, click the box that matches your internship experience, either "US-Based Internship" or "International Internship." If you have already completed the general application, simply check the box for the internship application you need and save your application. Do not uncheck any of the other boxes or change any of your previous responses.
Step two: Once the general application has been completed and submitted, you will then be directed to complete the conditional application that matches the type of scholarship you selected (either “US-Based Internship” or “International Internship”). Complete and submit the appropriate conditional application for full consideration.
After accepting their award within the application system, students selected for an Internship Scholarship should next register their internship in the LSA Opportunity Network.
In addition, all International Internship Scholarship students must complete U-M mandated health and safety requirements via the M-Compass Internship/Work Registry, including purchasing (and providing proof of enrollment for) GeoBlue U-M Travel Abroad Health Insurance for the entire duration of your internship.
Scholarship funds will be disbursed once a student accepts their award and completes all of the above requirements. LSA Internship Scholarships (both International and US-Based) are typically disbursed at the beginning of the Spring term. For students planning to register for additional classes in the Spring/Summer term, please know that this may affect when and how Internship Scholarship funds will be disbursed.
If, after you have accepted your award and completed all pre-disbursement requirements, you have specific questions about when your scholarship funds will be disbursed, please contact our office.
Frequently Asked Questions
If I am taking spring/summer classes or studying abroad and applying for tuition support, can I still apply for the LSA Internship Scholarship?
Students who are planning to pursue funding for more than one summer experience (study abroad, spring/summer classes) may not be eligible to also receive the LSA Internship Scholarship based on the impact multiple scholarships can have on their financial aid package.
If you are planning to apply for scholarships to support numerous summer experiences, please contact us.
If I am participating in an unpaid internship, can I assume that this scholarship will be my salary?
The LSA Internship Scholarship is meant to assist students in covering the necessary expenses tied to pursuing their internship (housing, food, transportation) but is not a salary. Also, please note that this internship scholarship is not meant to replace any salary you would have made during a summer job. The scholarship is solely meant to assist with expenses directly tied to this internship.
If I am interning outside of Ann Arbor, could this scholarship cover my Ann Arbor rent while I am away?
No, the LSA Internship Scholarship is meant to assist only with housing expenses directly tied to the internship you are pursuing and will not cover housing leases or expenses from another city.
What if I do not qualify for this scholarship? Is there anywhere else I could look for support?
Yes, there is! If for some reason you do not meet the qualifications for this internship scholarship, we encourage you to check out our list of additional funding sources.
