Katherine (Kate) Mendeloff, Lecturer IV, holds degrees from Princeton University and the Yale School of Drama. She has taught at the Residential College since 1990, both in the Drama Concentration and in the First Year Seminar Program. Her seminar “Inside the Dramatic Process” exposes students to different aspects of production: directing, design, dramaturgy and acting, as they read and analyze major American plays. Mendeloff’s upper level courses focus on a variety of topics such as contemporary plays on gender and race, Greek comedy and tragedy and the plays of Strindberg, Ibsen and Chekhov.
Kate has initiated numerous cross-disciplinary courses on diverse subjects, one of which, “Empowering Community Through Creative Expression” involves students in community internships. Mendeloff also teaches advanced classes in both acting and directing and is the faculty advisor for the Residential College Players. She is the creator and the Artistic Director of Shakespeare in the Arb since 2001. Mendeloff has directed for theater festivals in Moscow, Russia, and for the Tennessee Williams Festival in Provincetown, Massachusetts.
Her most recent project was a new play about the Detroit riot/rebellion of 1967, which she produced at the University Museum of Art and at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History in Detroit.
