Department Safety and Emergency Information
Ann Arbor, Michigan is a very safe place to live although emergencies, disasters, accidents, injuries, and crimes can occur without warning at any time. Being physically and psychologically prepared to handle unexpected emergencies is an individual as well as an organizational responsibility. Listed below is just a highlight of the information the University has available to everyone on emergency procedures. Please visit the Emergency Procedures section of the University of Michigan Department of Public Safety website to obtain a complete listing of the emergency procedures and to print this information for your records.
- For Police or medical emergencies call 9-1-1.
- In case of fire, pull fire alarm, then call 9-1-1.
- For a toxic spill, contact OSEH at 734.647.1143 and then notify DPS at 734.763.1131 and Technical Service at 734.763.4473.
- In case of power failure, please contact Technical Services at 734.763.4473. After hours, contact the Plant Department at 734.647.2059.
- For minor plumbing or electrical emergencies after hours call the Plant Department at 734.647.2059.
For serious after hours building concerns like flooding, theft, or natural gas leak, call the Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 734.763.1131.
Department of Public Safety
Dial 9-1-1 for all emergencies
The Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the University of Michigan's police department. Contact them for all emergencies, x31131 or 911 (911 dialed from all campus phones will connect to DPS).

Thefts and Property Damage
Contact Department of Public Safety (DPS) 763.1131 to file a report of any theft or property damage (i.e. flooding, fire etc.).
To file a proof of loss report with U-M Risk Management, see their website to obtain the proper form. Contact Technical Services by sending email to email@example.com to inform of the theft and/or property loss and to ensure proper memos are sent.
Witness a Crime/Suspicious Behavior
Any crime witnessed or suspicious people/behavior should be reported first to DPS at 763.1131 or 911. Then contact Technical Services by sending email to firstname.lastname@example.org. If unavailable, please contact the Physics Department Administrator, x61705.
If you see a suspicious package, do not open it or handle it. Contact DPS immediately at 763.1131 or 911.
Please be extra cautious in:
Locking doors when you leave an office
Making sure exterior doors are properly closed and latched in the evening and all windows are closed.
Noticing who is around you in the building. If they appear out of place, or you are unsure, or you see anything suspicious please call DPS at 763.1131
If you feel you are in danger call 911 immediately.
Place unwanted chemicals in tightly closed and labeled bottles. The label must include information about contents and toxicity. Contact Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) at 734.647.1143, for the proper disposal procedure.
For chemical spills: Contact OSEH 734.647.1143, Physics Technical Services 734.763.4473, and DPS 734.763.1131 for clean up.
Glass, Metals and Sharps:
Broken pieces of glass, metal, and sharp objects should be placed in separately labeled containers, not in wastebaskets, to avoid injury to custodial staff. Intact bottles that have been emptied and rinsed out may be placed in the corridor for disposal by the custodial staff. Contact Occupational Safety and Environmental Health (OSEH) at 734.647.1143, for the proper disposal procedure.
Liquid Nitrogen Dewar's
Departmental policy when filling LN2 Dewar's is that someone must be in attendance when filling a Dewar. Because of safety issues, failure to comply with the policy will result in loss of privileges.
When disposing of radioactive materials, please notify Radiation Control Service, 734.764.4420 or Physics Technical Services to arrange for pick-up.
