India Internship Initiative

The India Internship Initiative (III) is a collaborative effort between the College of LSA and the College of Engineering to provide undergraduate students at the University of Michigan with the funding to pursue opportunities in India. Students who qualify are eligible for a minimum of $1,500 in scholarship money to offset the costs of traveling to and living in this dynamic country.

The India Internship Initiative is sponsored by the U-M Office of the President, Engineering Career Resource Center, and the LSA Opportunity Hub.

Who qualifies?

Applicants must:

  • Be current LSA or Engineering undergraduate students 
  • Return for the fall semester following their internship
  • Secure an internship in India for the spring or summer 2019 term

Internships must be a minimum of 6 weeks, at least 30 hours per week, and meet the all programmatic requirements for the India Internship Initiative.

How much is awarded?

Those awarded will receive a minimum of $1,500 each to cover costs associated with interning, such as rent, airfare, and food.

How does the application process work?

Once you have secured an internship in India, complete and submit the India Internship Initiative funding application. Applications are live beginning January 10, 2019 and are open through March 10, 2019. If you have any questions about the funding application process, please contact

What are some examples of qualifying internships?

The experiences and industries vary widely. In previous years, students have explored graphic design in Bangalore, organic farming in Dehradun, and mechanical engineering in Noida.
