Awards for Excellent Academic Advising
A close-working relationship with an academic advisor can help a student get the very most out of his/her courses, experiences and educational opportunities while at college.
Recognizing this, LSA has established two annual awards that focus upon individual advisors selected by faculty, staff, and students as being among the very best.
Ruth M. Sinclair Memorial Award
This award was established in 1967 using an initial bequest made in memory of Ruth M. Sinclair, a member of the Class of 1908. This award recognizes an outstanding LSA general advisor in the Comprehensive Studies Program, Honors Program, Newnan LSA Academic Advising Center, or Residential College. Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the advising directors from CSP, Honors, Newnan Center, and RC as well as LSA Student Government representatives and previous award winners. Recommendations are forwarded to the LSA Executive Committee for final approval.
The winner receives a $500 check and an award certificate. Recipients are recognized at the first faculty meeting of the fall term.
Persons nominated for this award will have a genuine interest in undergraduate advising, challenge students to achieve at their highest possible level, and encourage them to pursue exciting and meaningful curricula and co-curricular activity. Successful nominees also will demonstrate dedication, initiative, and service to colleagues, the college, and the academic advising profession.
Excellence in Departmental Advising Award
This annual award, established in 1988, recognizes outstanding departmental advising. Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee comprised of the advising directors from CSP, Honors, Newnan Center, and RC as well as LSA Student Government representatives and previous award winners. Recommendations are forwarded to the LSA Executive Committee for final approval.
Each recipient is presented with a $500 check and an award certificate. Recipients are recognized at the first faculty meeting of the fall term.
Persons nominated for this award should be designated departmental advisors exerting consistent, positive, informal contact with undergraduates in their classes or departments/programs. They should also have demonstrated leadership in departmental advising by serving as a resource person to other departmental advisors. Special consideration will be given to nominees who have displayed great sensitivity to the needs and special problems of non-traditional students.
Unsung Champion
The Unsung Champion of Advising Award recognizes individuals on campus who are not designated formally as general or department advisors but, nevertheless, influence and guide students in positive ways.
