The keys to preventing harassment and discrimination are understanding and respect. In a University culture, we define ourselves in terms of intellectual exchange, appreciation of individual differences, and respect for each individual's personal dignity. In such a rich cultural environment, we all benefit from the mix of perspectives that each person brings to our community. While the University is committed to an inclusive learning and work environment based in respect, it can only fulfill that commitment through the actions of individual members of its community. When one person engages in discrimination or harassment, many of us suffer the effects.
The University of Michigan has a rich and diverse campus community with invaluable learning experiences to offer. Many of those learning experiences extend into issues of discrimination and harassment. There are great resources available for those wishing to learn more. Below are several resources to assist you in understanding and preventing harassment and discrimination.
Educational Programs and Opportunities:
The University of Michigan Expect Respect Program: An educational initiative aimed at supporting a campus climate in which all persons are treated with civility.
Diversity Matters At Michigan: Offers an array of opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to learn about diversity, to connect with the diverse communities beyond our borders, and to secure personal resources and assistance.
Intergroup Relations: Works proactively to promote understanding of intergroup relations inside and outside of the classroom; offers multidisciplinary courses distinguished by their experiential focus, teaching philosophy, and incorporation of dialogical models of communication.
ADVANCE: Promotes institutional transformation with respect to a diverse faculty in science and engineering fields.
Center for the Education of Women: Research and educational focus areas include women's education, employment, careers, leadership growth and development, and well being.
The Center for Research on Learning and Teaching: Promotes a positive, inclusive, and safe environment in their classrooms or laboratories; facilitates appropriate interactions within teams and during project work.
Human Resources Development: Offers a place where each and every member of the University can find an opportunity for improvement; more than one hundred programs and courses are offered and designed to teach you new skills to advance your career.
Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness Center: Promotes healthy relationships, teaches non-violence and equality, supports survivor healing, provides educational and supportive services, and fosters a respectful and safe environment for all members of the University of Michigan community.
