DEI PLAN PROGRESS
LSA's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion is exemplified by the progress we have made towards our strategic goals.
Objective 1: Increasing Access to All That U-M Has to Offer
Many students are unable to pursue internships and related opportunities without financial support. Through a partnership between the LSA Opportunity Hub and LSA’s Scholarship Office, the college provided $1.1 million in funding to more than 400 students for internships and related opportunities. This program gives all LSA students the chance to pursue activities that help them achieve their goals and aspirations.
Without a laptop, completing schoolwork and studying is more difficult—and participating in some classroom activities is simply impossible. This year, LSA provided 579 laptops to students with financial need. Over the past four years, LSA provided 1,302 laptops to students who could not otherwise afford them.
LSA’s Scholarship Office won the Excellence in Diversity & Inclusion in International Education for its work to provide funding for students who wish to study abroad but cannot afford the additional expenses of such programs.
LSA’s Passport Scholarship Program hosts an event on campus that provides funding for the passport application, passport photos, and access to U.S. passport officers who can help students complete the passport application. All first-year LSA students who are eligible for Pell Grants may participate. Last year the program provided 127 passports to students who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford them.
A $1.6 million grant was awarded by the Mellon Foundation to LSA and Henry Ford College in Dearborn. The grant supports initiatives that streamline the process for students to transfer to LSA humanities departments, and provide support tailored for transfer students.
Comprehensive Studies Program (CSP) Expansion
CSP is a comprehensive program of academic, social, and personal support for students with outstanding potential for success at the University of Michigan. Founded in 1983, it has become a model for other universities. This year, LSA expanded CSP’s capabilities in several ways:
- Increased the number of annual participants by 150 students, bringing the current total cohort to 2,993.
- Added two new assistant director positions and three new academic advisors.
- Hired two new math faculty members, and a new chemistry instructor.
- Created new connections for first-generation students to receive support.
- Hired an advisor who specializes in assisting transfer students.
Objective 2: Creating an Inclusive Climate
LSA Collegiate Fellows
LSA recruited nine new fellows to the faculty in 2018. Each combines scholarly excellence with demonstrated commitment to issues of equity and inclusion. Seventeen fellows have been recruited in departments across LSA over the last two years, toward a goal of hiring 50 over five years.
LSA staff members created a staff-oriented arm of this student-created group, which supports substantive and constructive dialogue across political/ideological differences. Last year, WeListen staff sessions have facilitated dialogue on a variety of political issues, such as gun control and free speech.
772 students enrolled in IGR courses in the last academic year. In these classes, most of which offer academic credit, students learn skills for working and communicating across differences in background, social identity, and worldview.
Lecturer Orientation and Training
LSA launched new orientation and training programs for lecturers that helps them run more inclusive classrooms. The programs also build stronger community among lecturers and connections to other faculty within LSA departments.
Faculty evaluation changes
LSA added contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion as one element (along with research, teaching, and service/leadership) to evaluate faculty performance. With this change, it is now possible to formally recognize the DEI contributions of LSA faculty members.
New DEI Advocates for Staff
LSA recruited 70 current staff to serve as DEI advocates throughout LSA’s departments, and also hired a staff diversity program assistant to work with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Manager.
LSA’s Undergraduate Climate Committee created a website that provides faculty with various classroom activities that facilitate inclusive classrooms. These activities come from best practices of LSA’s faculty, and has demonstrated success in increasing participation from all students, creating more active/experiential learning processes, engaging knowledge drawn from diverse sources, and facilitating student-created resources.
LSA’s division of undergraduate education employs more than 1,000 student workers in roles such as peer mentors, tutors, or front desk staff who regularly interact with other undergraduates. The Inclusive Campus Corps offers training to help cultivate these students’ skills in working with students from a variety of backgrounds, engaging in dialogue across differences, and bolstering inclusivity on campus.
