Fellowships & Grants

The International Institute provides generous support to faculty who wish to make a contribution to internationalizing the educational environment for students through international programs, research and teaching abroad, as well as funding for events that relate to area studies or international issues. The International Institute provides resources that help faculty enrich the educational environment for students. The II also serves as a connecting point for faculty to network with other scholars on campus and at partnering institutions worldwide.

Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program

Campus Deadline: June 24, 2022

The U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Fellowships provide opportunities for regular instructional faculty to improve their foreign language skills and area studies knowledge by conducting 3-12 months of research focused on non-Western European world region. Institutional grant application is coordinated by the International Institute; individual faculty must apply through the International Institute.

Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program

National Deadline: September 15 Annually

The Fulbright Scholar Program sends approximately 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. These prestigious grants provide funding for recipients to lecture or conduct research abroad for periods of two to 12 months in over 135 countries. 

II Fund for U-M Conferences and Workshops

Deadline: Rolling

Graduate students and faculty can apply for support for research-related conferences, symposia, and workshops in area and international studies.
