Learn about healthcare treatment, diagnosis, access, education, and training in urban and rural Madagascar while earning 9 credits. Through discussions with leading academics and allopathic doctors, explore alternative and allopathic healthcare practices in Madagascar and globally. Through lectures, educational excursions, and cultural interaction, examine topics including: Malagasy cultural assumptions and practices, ethical issues in healthcare delivery, the connections between post-colonial history, contemporary Malagasy politics, and healthcare policy and delivery. On excursions, students will learn more about the relationship between cultural beliefs and health delivery, national health policies and their implementation via existing government structures such as ministries and schools, nutrition and sanitation challenges, and the proliferation of non-formal education (such as folktales, stories, and taboos) in healthcare practices.
