Students who have encountered academic difficulties may be placed on a form of academic probation. Probation is intended as a form of support, not punishment, and is designed to help students make continued progress in completing their degree. Probation statuses are assigned by the LSA Academic Standards Board and determined by students’ overall and semester grade point averages.

What Are the Different Forms of Probation?

Probation: assigned when a student’s previous semester GPA was below 2.0 and their semester and overall GPAs are not at a special probation level. Students on probation are encouraged to meet with a general advisor to discuss their course schedule and develop a study plan.

Special Probation: assigned when a student’s GPA shows signs of significant academic difficulties. Students placed on special probation must meet with a Student Success advisor and complete an educational contract for their next semester.

Action Pending: assigned when a student’s previous semester GPA may reach the level of probation, depending upon the final grades received in their incomplete courses. Students on action pending status are encouraged to meet with a general advisor to develop a plan for completing the pending coursework.

Special Action Pending: assigned when a student’s GPA may reach the level of special probation, depending upon the final grades received in their incomplete courses. Students on special action pending status must meet with a Student Success advisor and complete an educational contract for their next semester.

I’ve Been Placed on Academic Probation. Now What?

Start by carefully reviewing the notification email. This message will explain the status and the requirements for the probation to be lifted. If you are on probation or action pending, you should schedule an appointment with a general advisor. If you are on special probation or special action pending, you must reach out to the Newnan Front Desk via email at newnanfrontdesk@umich.edu or by phone at 734.764.0332 to schedule an appointment with a Student Success advisor by the deadline specified in the email.

How Should I Prepare for My Meeting with an Advisor?

Take time to reflect on your previous semester, academic goals, and the areas where you have encountered academic difficulties. Do you notice patterns? How did you respond in the past when facing challenges? Advisors are not here to judge your past grades, but rather to help you think through next steps, connect you with campus resources, and offer perspective.

How Can My Probation Status Be Lifted?

The email notifying you of the probation status explains the exact requirements. In general, you must, in the next semester, achieve higher than a 2.0 GPA and not take incompletes. If you are on special probation or special action pending, you must also fulfill the terms of your educational contract.

What is the Difference Between Probation and Suspension?

Students on probation can continue taking classes in LSA. Students who are academically suspended must take time away from the university and then successfully complete the Academic Standards Board’s readmission petition process to return. For more, see the Suspension page.

I Still Have Questions. How Can I Contact the Academic Standards Board?

Email academic.standards@umich.edu or call the Newnan Academic Advising Center’s front desk at (734) 764-0332.
